George Sinclair, Owner at retailer Nimbus Beds, talks about the next generation of bed buyers and asks: Are we ready for them?

The average bed buyer today isn’t the same customer we were selling to ten or fifteen years ago. Buying habits have changed, expectations have changed, and perhaps most importantly, trust has changed.
The next generation of customers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, shop completely differently. If the bed industry wants to stay relevant, we need to understand what matters to them.
They Research Everything
Gone are the days when a customer walked into a showroom knowing very little about mattresses.
Today’s buyers have often spent hours online before they even arrive. They’ve watched TikTok videos, read Google reviews, compared prices, and asked questions in Facebook groups. Some have even used AI to compare products before stepping through your door.
That means when they visit your showroom, they’re not looking for a sales pitch. They’re looking for reassurance that they’ve made the right choice.
They Buy People as Much as Products
One thing that hasn’t changed is trust.
Customers still want to buy from someone they believe knows what they’re talking about. The difference is they often decide whether they trust you before they’ve even met you.
Your Google reviews, your Facebook page, your Instagram posts, and even how quickly you reply to messages all help shape that first impression.
For many younger customers, your online reputation is your new shop window.
They Want Honesty
This generation can spot a hard sell a mile away.
They appreciate straightforward advice, genuine recommendations, and retailers who are happy to explain why one mattress might be better suited to them than another, even if it’s not the most expensive one in the showroom.
Being honest builds confidence, and confidence builds sales.
Convenience Is No Longer a Bonus
Flexible delivery, clear communication, finance options, online booking, and fast responses are no longer nice extras. They’re expected.
That doesn’t mean every retailer needs the latest technology, but it does mean customers expect doing business with you to be easy.
The Good News for Independent Retailers
While online shopping continues to grow, there’s still something younger customers value that independent bed retailers are perfectly placed to offer. Authenticity.
People are becoming tired of faceless companies where everything feels automated. They appreciate dealing with real people who know their products, care about their reputation, and are available if something goes wrong.
That’s something an algorithm can never replace.
Looking Ahead
The next generation isn’t asking the industry to reinvent itself. They’re asking for honesty, expertise, convenience, and a buying experience that feels genuine. For retailers willing to adapt, that’s a huge opportunity.
The fundamentals of selling beds haven’t changed. People still want a comfortable mattress, good advice, and confidence they’ve made the right decision.
The way they arrive at that decision, however, is changing faster than ever. Those who understand the next generation won’t just sell them a bed. They’ll earn a customer for life.
